One stroke ahead at the turn, Nathan Utley delivered an even-par inward nine and pulled away for a 13-stroke victory.
For nine holes, the 2020 Midwest Masters remained very much in doubt.
For the final nine, it belonged entirely to Nathan Utley.
Utley turned a one-stroke lead into a runaway victory on the inward half, closing with a brilliant 36 to finish at 10-over-par 82 and defeat Mitch Lear by 13 strokes.
It was the defining surge of the tournament.
The opening nine had been a duel between Utley and Lear. Mitch held the advantage early, building a two-stroke lead through six holes after a steadier start. But Utley gradually worked his way back into position, drawing even at the seventh and remaining tied through the eighth.
When Utley made 4 at the ninth and Lear followed with 5, the lead changed hands.
That gave Utley a 46 on the outward nine and a one-shot advantage at the turn over Lear, who posted 47. At that stage, the championship was still unsettled.
The back nine changed everything.
Utley immediately created separation with a 4 at the 10th while Lear stumbled to a 7. In the span of one hole, the margin grew from one stroke to four.
From there, Utley never allowed the field back into range.
He extended the lead to six after the 11th, and although Lear briefly recovered one stroke at the 12th, the champion answered with relentless consistency over the middle of the inward half. Utley played holes 13 through 18 in 25 strokes, a closing stretch that steadily widened the margin from five to eight, then 10, and eventually 13.
By the time he walked off the 18th green, the tournament had gone from competitive to emphatic.
Utley’s inward 36 was the best nine-hole score of the day by a wide margin and the only even-par side recorded in the field. After a 46 on the front, he completely transformed his round on the back, carding 4-3-4-4-4-4-5-4-4 to secure the title in decisive fashion.
Lear finished alone in second at 23-over 95. His outward 47 kept him within striking distance through the turn, but a back-nine 48 left him unable to answer Utley’s charge. He remained in second throughout and finished five strokes ahead of the next group.
Jonah Laws and Noah Thompson shared third place at 28-over 100. Nyk Lear followed in fifth at 101, while Rex Utley placed sixth at 102. Kevin Schuh finished seventh at 103.
Wyatt Mosson took eighth at 110, two strokes ahead of Tanner Watkins. Ryan Lear finished 10th at 116, and Brayden Cowling rounded out the field at 118.
But the story of the day was the champion’s closing half.
Utley entered the back nine with only the slimmest of margins. Nine holes later, he had produced the round’s signature performance—an even-par 36—and turned a close contest into a 13-shot victory.
That finish made Nathan Utley the 2020 Midwest Masters champion, a back-to-back triumph at the Edwards County Golf Club’s marquee event.
